Adelaide is a relaxed seaside city which feels like a big country town. The city centre is surrounded by a green ring of parkland, and the city itself has a backdrop of the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
Founded in 1836, and named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (queen consort to King William IV), Adelaide is one of the few Australian cities without a convict history. William Light, a British naval and army officer, was the first Surveyor-General of the Colony of South Australia. He chose the site for Adelaide, designing the layout of its streets and parks in a grid layout, complete with wide boulevards, large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands. Today Adelaide is Australia’s fifth largest city, with a population of over 1.3 million inhabitants. Adelaide is a vibrant coastal city, with beaches, historic buildings, lush parklands, many cultural events and festivals, world-famous wine regions, and quality bars & restaurants. Its no wonder Adelaide is ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world.
